When Buddhism first spread into China, monks usually wore the monastic clothes with two shoulders covered or one shoulder bared. In Dunhuang, because of its special geographical location, environment, and culture, different styles appeared among the donor monks. Some styles such as wearing the monastic clothes with the right shoulder bared, or with buttons fastened on one side of the body, or using fasteners, or wrapping the robe around reflect the Sinicization and secularization of Buddhist costumes.
