Far from the Madding Crowd is the most representative and harmonious “Wessex” novel of Thomas Hardy. In it, Hardy describes respectively the psychopathic symptoms of the people in Weatherbury: the“fetishism” of hearts, the “vacuum” of s!sprit, the “incapability” of actions, the “unison” of living styles and the “estrangement” of existence from the psychoecocritical perspective. He also reveals the roots of these symptoms., the dual opposition between mankind and nature caused by anthropoeentricism, and the collapse of human relationships, the removal of spiritual values and the befuddlement of one's self caused by consumerism and desire expan- sionism of industrial civilization. Thus it has rather far realistic ecological significance
