狄更斯在世时,他的创作就备受评论界的关注。《博兹札记》和《匹克威克外传》让狄更斯成为众人瞩目的"上升的火箭",以致于他随后出版的每一部小说都引起了评论的巨大反响和论战。同时代的评论中既有小说家、学者的批评,也有普通读者"业余"的解读。他们或从单部小说探讨狄更斯小说的思想、人物、语言等,或将狄更斯与各个不同时代的作家进行广泛而深入的比较,还有综合狄更斯的全部或部分小说的宏观性和综合性评论来探讨狄更斯的创作特质。这些评论为后来的狄更斯研究奠定了基础。
Dickens＇s literary creation was strongly concerned by critics in his lifetime.Dickens was regarded as a ＂rising rocket＂ through the publication of Sketches by Boz and Pickwick Papers.Due to his reputation,each of his subsequent novels caused a huge response and debate among critics.These criticism not only included scholarly comments from contemporary novelists but also amateur interpretations from ordinary readers.Some criticism explored the themes,characters and language of Dickens＇s single novel.Some made in-depth comparison between Dickens and other writers.Some made comprehensive reviews by taking Dickens＇s novels as a whole.These comments laid wide foundations for later researches on Charles Dickens.
