English Preposition is one of the most common polysemies which has flexible collocations and various meanings. This kind of characteristics brings English learners a lot of difficulties in learning. Based on Lakoff ＆ Johnson＇s container metaphor theory and within the framework of cognitive linguistics, this paper intends to ana- lyze the spatial meanings and the metaphorical extensions of prepostion in. The metaphorical interpretation of pre- postion in provides English learners with a deeper understanding of its multiple meanings and their relations so as to help learners memorize and use this word properly in different situations.
