As one of the masterpiece comedies by William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice strictly adheres to Shakespearian artistic creative principle of "Fair, kind, and true - three themes in one", and integrates the notions of true friendship, fair love and the kindness of human nature into the main plot - the trial scene. The Merchant of Venice demonstrates that if an undue legal justice is stressed, we shall deviate from our original intention--the pursuit of the real justice, and which in turn, may bring the society ruled by law into a dilemma. To the spectators and readers, especially to the Chinese public in the transition period from a traditional society ruled by man into a harmonious society ruled by law, this unique and leading theme has far-reaching and immediate enlightenment significance.
