《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》是乔治.爱略特所做的一场人生道德实验,她在探索一种影响个人命运选择的道德力量。她认为人生来有追求自我的欲望,一旦自我追求与外界现实相左时,指导其作出正确人生选择的是建立在对他人的爱与同情基础上的道德情感。主人公麦琪一生经历了内心欲望和外界力量之间的不断冲突,但是道德上的不断成熟以及对家人、朋友的爱让她选择牺牲自己,达到了内心的平静以及与外界的融合。

The Mill on the Floss is a moral experiment in life made by George Eliot,in which she is exploring the power of morality influcing one’s life choices.She thinks that one is born to pursue personal desires,but once personal desires conflict with the outer world,what guides him to make correct life choices is nothing but the moral sentiment based on his love and sympathy for others.The protagonist Maggie experiences the inner struggle between her own desires and the outer forces,but with moral maturity she finally chooses to sacrifice herself for the sake of her love to her family and her friends,and achieves inner tranquility and reconciliation with the outer world.
