Brief Analysis of Indeterminacy of Translation from "the Third Text"

奎因在《词与物》一书中第一次提出了翻译的不确定性命题,他提出指称的不确定性和意义的不确定性将导致翻译的不确定性。但这并不能说明翻译是不可为的。不确定性是翻译过程中始终存在的一个问题,我们试通过分析翻译不确定性的命题,从"第三文本"这一哲学角度探寻翻译不确定性的解决之道。"第三文本"有别于传统的翻译理论或策略,它使我们能够重新审视不同风格和水平的译作,最重要的在于为我们从哲学角度研究翻译的本质和翻译中存在的一些所谓的不可译现象提供了思路和方法。

Quine put forward the thesis ＂indeterminacy of translation＂ the first time in Word and Object and points out the indetermina- cy of reference and the indeterminacy of meaning cause the indeterminacy of translation. But it can not prove that translation can not be done. Indeterminacy of translation is a common problem often discussed in translation. We will try to analyze the indeterminacy of trans- lation and seek the solution of it from philosophical perspective ＂the third text＂ intervention. ＂The third text＂ differs from traditional translation theories and strategies and makes us re - exam the translation of different styles and levels. Its main contribution lies in that it provides some thinking and methods for the research of translation＇ s nature and so - called untranslatability from the philosophical point of view.
