This paper focuses on the discourse marker ＂why＂.In Sperber and Wilson＇s relevance theory,the discourse marker ＂why＂ in verbal communication can be seen as a signpost which constrains the concomitant background selection,negotiates and renegotiates mutual cognitive environment,thus constraining and guiding through interpretation process and ensuring smooth conversation.This analysis covers four distinct marker functions of ＂why＂： marker of attitude and emotion,marker of frame,rectifier of incorrect assumption,and delay device.The research illustrates the procedural meaning of the discourse marker ＂why＂.
