On Characteristics of Shen-Song Styled Poetry

沈佺期、宋之问是初唐后期的重要诗人,其继承前人的理论和经验,创作了大量既众体皆备、又精工严密的诗歌,使五、七言诗在律化方面臻于成熟并最后定型,并拓展了诗歌的题材内容而使得形式与内容高度结合,还提高丰富了诗歌的表现技艺、手法,进而形成其独特诗风,为唐诗的发展作出了重要的贡献,两人因此而齐名,故史称"沈宋"或"沈宋体"。

Based on the theories and experience of their predecessors, Shen Quanqi and Song Zhiwen, the two renowned poets of the early Tang Dynasty, created a large quantity of poems rich in content and prominent in art. They improved and molded the style of ＂Five-Character Poetry＂ and ＂Seven-Character Poetry＂ , i.e., poems composed of five or seven characters to a line, varied the themes of poetry for the close integration of form and content, and enriched the expression and techniques of poetry, which ultimately shaped their own poetic style. Their significant contributions to the development of the Tang poetry have earned them a reputation as ＂Shen-Song＂ or ＂Shen-Song Style＂ in the history of literature.
