China's luggage industry has enjoyed a rapid growth in its short history. Its exports had grown at an average rate of 20% from 2001 to 2008. Currently the country is the greatest producing base of bags and cases in the world, and its exports of such goods account for one quarter of the global luggage market. The total value of China's processing trade export contracts between February and July 2011 saw a lower growth than before. But the average export price rose sharply. In February, the price climbed at an astonishing year-on-year rate of 248.35%. But the luggage exports have encountered some difficulties since 2010. The raw material's price has been rising globally. The roaring cotton price and oil price in the world market have driven the costs of cloth and plastics to high levels. The appreciation of RMB has eroded the luggage exporters'profits. The rising salaries and decreasing labors have boosted the luggage firms’ costs. The global leading brands of bags and cases have sped into China. To cope with these problems, the Chinese luggage firms will have to heighten the added value of their products and to adapt to the international trade barriers. The preferential duties between China and its FTA partners will spur China's luggage exports.
