This article introduces a design thought combining top-down and modularization design based on the whole machine tool design in WindChill PDM system,and summarizes a set of normative flow and method of the whole and modularization design used in developing new machine tool product. Through the test of practice, it has improved the whole RD capability, enriched the RD methods,shortened the design period and promoted the design quality. It also can realize products changing quickly with market demands and provides important guidance to build product RD system.
