由于命运的不幸,史铁生为求思想上的解脱看了一些宗教类的书,也曾不断地谈佛说道谈信仰谈宗教。这期间,史铁生结合自己的体验对宗教有了自己独特的理解,形成了独具精神个性的宗教观。主要内容是:佛(神)不是福报的源泉而是苦难里心魂的一条救路;人可以走向天堂,不可以走到天堂,天堂在人追求信仰的过程中;宗教精神不等于宗教,宗教的要旨是靠神对人的拯救,宗教精神是人依靠自己的精神力量对自我的拯救。史铁生宗教观的实质是为自己为人类寻求灵魂的归宿。
