Lattimore and His Mutual Border Theory

拉铁摩尔作为美国汉学界颇孚众望的"中国通"尤其关注于中国历史上的边疆现象,不仅从边疆来解释中国历史,以一种内部主义视角审视中国亚洲内陆边疆社会,而且主要集矢于农耕文明与草原文明间互动往来的拉锯状态,将双方交汇之边疆视为这两种文明的黏合剂,表现出将中国内地的王朝循环与草原游牧社会的历史循环两大系统联系起来考察的运思取向,对于我们消解冲击-反应模式具有启发意义。

As an old China hand among the American Sinologists,Lattimore paid special attention to border-related phenomenon in Chinese history,He not only looked at the society in inland and border of China,Asia,but also laid emphasis on the mutual relationship between agriculture civilization and pastureland culture. He regarded the overlap of border as an adhesive of the two cultures. This is inspiring for us to clear up the shock-respond model when studying the two cultures.
