Objective To study the parasitic susceptibility and the effect of parasitic infection on liver function in the diabetic rat liver. Methods Thirty-seven Wistar rats were randomly divided into a healthy control group and two groups representing a diabetic model of parasitic infection(DM) at 3 months(DM3) and at 6 months(DM6).Diabetes was induced with a single injection of streptozotocin(STZ).At the end of the experiment, the rats were sacrificed, they were checked for the presence or lack of tapeworms in cysts on the surface of the liver, and liver function was determined with an automatic biochemical analyzer. Results One rat in the DM3 group and 7 in the DM6 group were infected with Taenia taeniaeformis.Compared to the healthy control group, the DM3 group had a significantly higher ALT level(P0.05) and the DM6 group had markedly higher ALT and AST levels(P0.05).Differences in the ALT and AST levels in the DM3 group and DM6 group were statistically significant(P0.05). Conclusion The diabetic rat liver had increased susceptibility to parasites and parasitic infection affected liver function.
