On Ma Xulun's Thoughts of Higher Education

马叙伦在担任新中国第一任教育部部长和高等教育部部长期间提出了一系列闪烁着真知灼见的高等教育思想。他主张:高等教育必须密切配合国家建设的需要,首先为经济建设服务;高等教育要为工农开门,朝大众化方向发展;要对旧的高等教育进行改造,系统地学习苏联教育经验,进行教学改革。这些思想代表着当时我国主流的高等教育思想,在指导我国高等教育实践的过程中产生了产生了重大的、积极的影响。

During his tour of duty as the In＇st minister of PRC＇s Ministry of Education and higher education, Ma Xu- lun raised a series of penetrating thoughts on higher education. He claimed that higher education must closely meet the need of national construction, especially the economic growth; the door of higher education should also be open to the children of workers and farmers; old-fashioned highdr education system should be renewed; teaching reforms should be carried out, including systematically learning from the Soviet Union＇s educational experience, adjusting the setup of departments and colleges, and establishing specialties. These thoughts represented the mainstream of higher education thoughts then, and produced great and active influence on guiding the practice of Chinese higher education.
