The essay attempts to discuss how the English poet Shelley enters Chinese readership's literary imagination through the representations of five histories of English literature, during the period of 1908 - 1937. While Wang Jing and Ouyang Lan suggest the influence of Taine's idea of history of literature, Zeng Xubai emphasizes the poet's crystalization of poetic affections. Through his translation, Lin Huiyuan sings the praise of Shelley's lyrics and eulogizes the poet as "the best singer". Finally, Jin Donglei presents the image of Shelley as a revolutionary poet, subscribing to the popular revolutionary discourse of the time.
