Ruggedness and Simplicity in Lean and Stately Writing: On the Features of the ZHANG Da-qian Style of Calligraphy

"大千体"书法具有结体险峻、用笔灵活、章法整肃和气韵朴茂的特点,它们是张大千在继承中国历代书法优秀传统基础上,重点学习碑派书法"尚朴",追求个性自由抒发"尚意",与绘画相得益彰和适应时代需要产生形成的。"大千体"书法在碑学书法"壮美"的共性中更具有"华美"的个性,学习欣赏"大千体"书法要充分认识其特点,才能把握其质朴、华美的实质。

This paper has analyzed the features of the ZHANG Da-qian style of calligraphy： ruggedness as a whole, flex- ibility in writing, seriousness of its structure, and leanness of its artistic conception. They were brought about on the basis of inheriting the excellent tradition of Chinese calligraphy, stressing the study of the simplicity-oriented epigraphic writing, pursuit of conception-oriented free expression, combination with painting and adaptation to the time. In the universal feature of grandeur, the ZHANG Da-qian style of calligraphy protrudes its magnificence. One should fully know the features of such style of calligraphy when studying and appreciating it. Only in this way can he grasp its nature of simplicity and magnificence.
