Conversational implicature is the study of ＂what is said＂ and ＂what is meant＂.The classic Gricean conversational implicature is a great breakthrough in pragmatic studies.The Neo-Gricean conversational implicature put forward by Leech、Levinson、Sperber and Wilson presents an effective way in interpreting many phenomena where all sub-maxims are violated consciously.Based on the classic Gricean theory and Neo-Gricean theory,this paper aims to interpret the dialogues in Jane Austen＇s novel Persuasion and illustrate the effectiveness of the pragmatic theory in understanding the novel.
