进入21世纪以来,刘震云的创作开始极度关注"说话"。其中成书于2003年的《手机》通过对20世纪30年代、60年代、21世纪三个时段不同的通讯方式引发的生活事件为线索,串起了语言河流中的种种故事,折射了新世纪城市生活的转变。

When it comes to the 21st century, Liu Zhenyun has begun to be extremely attentive to ＂speech＂ in his writing, as is manifest in The Mobile Phone written in 2003. In the novel, various stories of speech in life are related and the changes in the urban life of the new century are mirrored by threading life incidents caused by different communication modes in three diverse periods： the 1930s, 1960s and the 21st century.
