Philip Roth ventured into non-fictional writing from 1988 to 1993 when he published four books of which each contains non-fictional accounts of the author's life. While Roth's postmodernist aesthetics was usually the first concern for many academic critics in their analysis of Roth's most radical experiments in narrative form in the non-fiction writing, this essay argues that Roth's non-fictional writings serve as the counter 'defensive texts' to the accusations of disregarding Jewish tradition and the responsibility of Jewish writer on him.Through a close reading of The Facts,Deception,Patrimony, and Operation Shylock, the essay finds that Roth's introduction of his undisguised self into his books reveals his inner world about writing truly through his fictional veils and leads to a heightened concern with the ways in which writing inevitably affects others.
