Three Realms of Interpretation: An Artistic Road for the Teaching of Foreign Literature

摘要 外国文学教学的最大难题在于"理解"。阐释艺术的三个境界,也应该是外国文学教学的三个境界。"常恨言语浅,不如人意深"是其中的第一个境界,它意味着对言不尽意这一道理的深刻体会,以及克服文字异化的强烈愿望。第二个境界,即"言有尽而意无穷",要求学生体悟语言的启示性,熟谙语言的局限性和暗示力相生相克、二律背反的道理,并通过细读来掌握作品的结构性意象。而"静故了群动,空故纳万境"标志着阐释艺术的第三个境界,也是最高境界。 The greatest obstacle to the teaching of foreign literature lies in 'comprehension.' The three realms featuring the art of interpretation should also be the ideal state for the teaching of foreign literature.The first realm is pinpointed by the poetic lines 'How often I regret that words are too shallow / Ever to reach the depth of human feelings,' which implies a deep understanding of the fact that speech cannot fully convey the meaning and a strong desire for overcoming the alienation of words.The second realm,namely 'meaning reaching out to infinitude when words have come to an end,' calls for students to gain enlightenment from language,to fully understand the antinomy of a relationship marked by both the inadequacy of language and its suggestiveness,and to learn and grasp the structural imagery of a literary work through close reading.The third realm,a supreme one,finds an apt expression in Su Shi's poem: '...for the quiet comprehends all motions,/ and the void admits of ten thousand worlds.'
