Cultural Default in English Reading

阅读是外语学习者获得信息和交流信息最重要的手段之一,它不仅涉及语言问题,也涉及文化问题。文化缺省是英语阅读中的一个重要现象,它具有普遍性和鲜明的文化特性。文章着重从起因及与阅读的关系入手探讨跨文化交际中的文化缺省现象,呼吁读者加强文化背景知识的学习,提高对文化缺省的识别能力,正确理解对读者不言自明的内隐信息,提高阅读效果。

As one of the most important means of obtaining and exchanging information, reading is closely related to language and culture. Cultural default can be defined as the absence of some cultural background knowledge shared by the author and his/her intended reader,which is quite universal and culture-specific. This paper makes an analysis of the phenomena of cultural default and suggests that the readers should acquire more cultural background knowledge, enhance their discriminative analysis of cultural default to understand correctly its implicit information, and at last improve reading efficiency.
