Objective With CK-19 in the peripheral blood as indicator to assess the role of postoperative chemotherapy and monitoring of blood micrometastases. Methods 120 breast cancer patients involved in the study, nested RT-PCR was used to detect CK-19 mRNA in peripheral blood, and the expression of CK-19 before and after chemotherapy, and the relationship between CK-19 expression and distant metastasis of breast cancer were compared. Results The rate of micrometastasis was 23.33% before chemotherapy, 3.33% after chemotherapy, and the difference was signifieant(P 〈0.01 ); the tumor metastasis rate was 76.9% in CK-19 positive group, 8.6% in CK-19 negative group, and the difference was significant (P 〈0.01 ). Conclusion Postoperative chemotherapy can reduce breast cancer micrometastases in blood. CK-19 in peripheral blood can monitor breast cancer mierometastases.
