Despite hearing it directly from Tao Zhongfu himself, 1 could scarcely believe my ears.Despite only speaking Mandarin and the Wenzhou dialect,this middle aged man was preparing to take his family of four to open a copper mine in a place they had only heard about before:the Congo. For those adventurers coming from the private sector,it is extremely difficult to get the same financial and administrative support that state owned enterprises receive.In fact many businesses are not even listed with the local Economic and Commercial Counselor's Office.Fantastical stories are told about them;that some are frequent quests of the Congo President,and that some even have their very own private armies.Of course these are exaggerations, most entrepreneurs,even those with a little power,tend to try and distance themselves from the government.In a country where government officials seem to change daily,getting to attached to a particular politician can end up causing trouble down the road.
