Penetrating the Transparency of Language:An Interpretation of the Relationships between Language and Power in Animal Farm

《动物农场》是一部政治寓言,解构了一场政治革命,阐释了这场革命中的胜利与教训。本文从批评式语篇分析理论的角度,以权力与语言之间的关系为主线,重新解读《动物农场》。小说中,不同角色分别利用语言的鼓动功能、强制功能、误导功能和塑造功能,辅助自己获得权力、维持权力和巩固权力。因此,本研究认为,语言绝不是透明的交际工具,它有各种功能进行阐释和辅助权力;语言展示权力,权力利用语言;语言与权力结合之处恰恰说明了它与欲望和权力之间的联系。

Animal Farm is a political fable which has deconstructed a political revolution and has interpreted successes and lessons of the revolution on an animal farm.This paper attempts to reinterpret Animal Farm based on interactive relationships between language and power from a perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis.Different characters in the novel utilize the encouraging function,the coercive function,the misleading function and the shaping function of language to support themselves to gain,maintain and consolidate their power.Thus,this research assumes that language is far from a transparent instrument.Language has various functions to demonstrate and assist power;language exhibits power and power utilizes language;the combination between language and power reveals the desire of language.
