摘要
Utility and artistic value are two essential elements to which Chinese engravers have always paid particular attention, and neither of of these elements can be absent in the work of seal cutting. Usually, artistic taste plays a key role in aesthetic appreciation. Thus, a profound intimacy can be established between the artist and the viewer, who has the equal taste with which to appreciate his art. This is the core of the Chinese art tradition. As for the Chinese traditional seal cutting, there is a standard form which is followed by every artist. Yet,
Zhuang Moshi, a famous master of calligraphy and seal cutting in modern China, was born into a family of seal cutters, and his given name, Moshi, comes out from this family tradition and means "ink and stone," the basic tools used for calligraphy and seal cutting. Zhuang Moshi’s seals encompass both the antiquity of traditional Chinese art and the modernity of contemporary art, and have a very impressive visual impact.
