Descriptive translation studies take "what translation is" as study object, while prescriptive translation studies take -what translation ought to be" as study object. Behind the dispute between description and prescription lies the famous philosophical "is/ought (fact/value) " puzzle. Taking this philosophical origin as its starting point, and the philosophical findings concerning the "fact/value" puzzle as its theoretical basis, this paper attempts to analyze the essence of the dispute, locate its crux, explore the academic differences between descriptive translation studies and prescriptive translation studies, and at the same time, unravel their internal link.
