《周易》晋卦“鼫鼠”新证

New Evidences on the Meaning of the Binding Word shi shu 鼫鼠,in Hexagram Jin(■)

联绵词由两个音节连缀成义,以音表义,所以从字形上往往不能得到准确的意义信息。《晋》卦中"鼫鼠"是联绵词,表示迟疑不决之貌。通过转语系联,发现"鼫鼠"与"首鼠"、"犹豫"、"蹄躅"等是同一个词的不同书写形式。然后,比较《晋》卦中的类同句,回归语境,证明"鼫鼠"训作"迟疑不决之貌"是合理的。

A binding word is made up of two syllables to disclose its meanings by sound. So it is always difficult to obtain its accurate meanings merely from its character pattern. The binding word shi shu 鼫鼠 in the fourth line statement of hexagram Jin 晋（ , Progress, 35 ） exposes a hesitating state. Through certain correlations of the binding words with similar sounds, we can find that shi shu 鼫鼠 together with the binding words such as shou shu 首鼠, you yu 犹豫, zhi zhu 跻躅, all of which mean hesitation, are but variants of the same original word. In returning to the similar words in hexagram Jin and the context, it will be tenable if we interpret Shi shu 鼫鼠 as a state of hesitation.
