This paper explores some of the basic design principles that need to be considered in the early stages of planning a new theatre. It aims to answer questions about the location of the building and how the various elements of the brief can be organized within the design of the theatre building. Key factors which influence the planning of the building such as access for people with disabilities, fire safety, acoustics, and the integration of mechanical and electrical services, and environmental sustainability are discussed in this section.
