摘要 Acting as a necessary part of teaching, assessment is adopted by many teachers and studied and discussed by many educators in the higher vocational English learning and teaching. But traditional product-oriented assessment used in higher vocational schools is a kind of summative assessment and cannot give a complete picture of students' oral English growth, nor can it validly evaluate students' performance, and instead frustrates these students. In order to meet this shortage a new kind of assessment appears, it is formative assessment. Portfolio assessment is a type of formative assessment. The paper attempts to investigate the necessity of portfolio assessment in English teaching in higher vocational schools.
