Images of Chinese Men in the Eyes of Australian Women from the latter half of the 19th Century to the Early 20th Century

学界对于1 9世纪中期至20世纪初澳洲华人形象的既有研究中主要讨论的是白人男性对于华人男性的认识,白人女性的声音被忽视和隐匿。本文试图从与华人男性移民有过亲密关系和广泛接触的白人女性对他们的评价着手进行分析,揭示存在于另一种思维中的华人男性形象及其形成的背景,以丰富我们对于当时澳大利亚种族关系的认识。

The existing research on the images of Chinese men in the eyes of Australians from the latter half of the 19th century to the early 20th century mainly focuses on white men＇s point of view. The voices of white women are either overlooked or hidden. The article attempts to disclose another kind of image of Chinese men through the analysis of remarks from white women with whom Chi nese men have intimate relations. In doing so the article tries to enrich our understanding of the racial relation in Australia.
