Mindin ( also known as spondin-2) is a highly conserved extracellular matrix protein. Previous evidences indicated that mindin, as a pattern of recognition moleculers for microbial pathogens and an integrin ligand, participated in non-specific and specific immunoreactions, and promoted the adhesion and outgrowth of neurons. Recent researches found that mindin was produced by the impaired podocytes, participated in the progression of diabetic nephropathy, and was related to podocyte injury. Compared with healthy populations, the mindin expression from urine was increased in patients with type 2 diabetes, and can reflect the severity of diabetic nephropathy. Therefore, mindin is expected to be a new biomarker of podocyte injury in diabetic nephropathy.
