Objective To investigate the expressions of MMP-9, COX-2 and E-cadherin in papillary thyroid microeareinoma(PTMC) and its relationship with cervical lymph node metastasis. Methods Forty-seven papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) specimens were stained for MMP-9, COX-2 and E-cadherin by immunohistochemical technique. Correlation of cervical lymph node metastasis with expression of MMP-9, COX-2 and E- cadherin was analyzed. Results The positive expression rates of MMP-9, COX-2 and E-cadherin in PT- MC were 44.7 % (21/47 ), 57.5 % ( 27/47 ) and 61.7 % ( 29/47 ), respectively. The positive expression rates of patients with cervical lymph node metastasis were 69. 2% (9/13), 84.6% ( 11/13 ) and 30. 8% (4/13), while were 35.3% (12/34), 47.1% (16/34)and 73.5% (25/34) in patients without lymphnode metastasis. There were significant differences in the expression of MMP-9, COX-2 and E-cadherin in PTMC with and without cervical lymph metastasis (P 〈 0. 05 ). The expressions of MMP-9 and COX-2 in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) were positively related with cervical lymph node metastases, while the expressions of E-cadherin in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) was negatively related with cervical lymph node metastases. Conclusions The expressions of MMP-9, COX-2, E-cadherin in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma were related to cervical lymph node metastasis, and could be helpful indicators for judging clinical progress and estimating prognosis.
