The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays a central role in the maintainance of homeostasis of blood pressure and electrolyte balance. Recently, the RAS has been implicated in the pathogenesis on the pathogenesis of respiratory disease, especially in pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary artery hypertension. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 was cloned as a first homolog of human ACE and functioned as an negative regulator of RAS. Recent studies has confirmed the protective effect of ACE2 against acute lung injury. In this review we shall discuss the roles for ACE2 in disease pathogenesis and the possibility of ACE2 as a novel approach for the treatment of lung diseases.
