Through the method of close reading,based on the background that Charlotte Bronte suffered from the absence of mother and was eager for maternal love,the thesis analyzes the substitute mothers in Jane Eyre.They include people and some images in the nature.They are Mrs.Reed and Bessie at Gateshead,Miss Temple at Lowood school,Mrs.Fairfax in Thornfield and Diana and Mary at Moor House.Mrs.Reed does badly as a substitute mother but the others all care about Jane Eyre in different aspects.The images of mother in the nature are the moon and the nature itself,who appear in time when Jane Eyre needs help and give Jane Eyre some guidance.
