Chuwangcheng (the Chu Royal City) Site located to the east of Yunmeng County seat is a historical and cultural site under provincial protection. Since the 1970s, the archaeologists of Hubei Province conducted surveys and excavations to many loci in the Chuwangcheng Site and its peripheral areas and satisfying results have been got, including the Zhenzhupo Chu tombs, Shuihudi Qin tombs, Dafentou Han tombs, Longgang Qin and Han tombs, and the sectioning of the city walls. In order to coordinate with local constructions, two excavations were conducted to the western zone of Chuwangcheng Site in October to November 1988 and December 1988 to January 1989, which excavated 445 sq m in total and recovered 71 ash pits, ash ditches, water wells, house foundations and tombs from the Warring-States Period to the Tang and Song Dynasties. From these remains, large amounts of artifacts made of pottery, bronze, porcelain, glazed pottery, iron and stone were unearthed, which reflected rich cultural connotations mainly that of the Warring-States Period to the Han Dynasty. This report comprehensively collected the materials of these two excavations, which can supplement the previous archaeological discoveries. These results confirmed again that the Chuwangcheng Site was a city site first built in the Eastern Zhou Period and abandoned in the Han Dynasty. After that, this site was still used as a settlement, except that the residential areas slightly moved to the west of the original city location. At present, the Yunmeng County seat was still superimposed upon the western zone of the Chuwangcheng Site.
