Salons were major places for spreading new ideas. Many distinguished men joined in salons during the Renaissance and Enlightenment. Many famous salons in France during the 176 century were related to the salons held by Mme de Rambouillet from 1607 to 1665. The hostesses tried to invite the cream from all trades to these salons. Some very famous scientists, such as Pascal who talked about his new scientific discoveries also joined in these salons, and among the hostesses there were some who had great interest in science, but science seldom became a major topic in the salons. We try to explain this phenomenon in the light of the salons’ background and mechanics in the 17th century.
