An Explanation of the Inscriptions on the Exorcistic Vessels from a Western Jin Burial in Xianyang

本文对咸阳师院附中西晋墓发现的5件镇墓瓶上的朱书文字进行了考释,5件镇墓瓶代表和压镇五方。为研究汉晋时期的道教信仰及流传提供了实物资料。

This paper provides explanations of the vermillion inscriptions on fivezhemnuping exorcistic vessels excavated from a Western Jin burial at the Affiliated High school of Xianyang Normal University. The five bottles might have indicated five directions respectively and have been used to guard these directions. The inscriptions provide important data on religion in the Han and Jin Dynasties, and they are of great value for the study of mortuary customs during this period.
