In 2010, the north portion of the East Zone of Tuyoq Grottoes in Shanshan (Piqan) County, Xinjiang was excavated. The excavation uncovered areas about 2500 sq m in total, by which over 50 caves and many important cave cave or porch remains were recovered, about 200 sq m of murals were newly discovered and large amounts of fragments of scriptures, silk paintings and wooden implements were unearthed. All of the caves were in multi-storied cluster layouts centered by worshipping caves (caitya), around, above and below which the dorm caves, meditation caves and other functional caves were opened. K18 which was opened around the 5th century would be the central cave of these cave clusters. The excavation of the north portion of the East Zone of Tuyoq Grottoes provided valuable new data for the researches on the ancient Buddhist cave temples and the history and culture of ancient Turfan area.
