On Hardy's Historiography Revealed in Tess of the D'Urbervilles

《德伯家的苔丝》是哈代晚期小说的标志,在其创作中具有里程碑的意义。本文着力新历史主义文本的历史性这一角度,从反不平等、女性意识和伦理主张几个方面看《苔丝》反映出来的哈代浓郁的历史意识,展示小说作者对当时的文化中心话语的不认同和颠覆企图以及具有强烈历史局限性的改良倾向,从而揭示作品的深层意义。

Tess of the D＇Urbervilles is a sign of Hardy＇s later novels and a milestone of his novel-writing.The thesis explores Hardy＇s rich historical consciousness in Tess by applying the major theory of New Historicism,or rather the New Historicist dictum of ＂historicity of text.＂ It is argued that Hardy debated and subverted temporal cultural discourse,though he had his limitations and weakness as a bourgeois writer,in spite of his attack against social injustice,feminist consciousness and heading for new moral codes.
