The novel, on the cliff, is a political metaphor based on a story of extramarital love. It displays the intellectuals＇ return to the mainstream ideology from the petty bourgeoisie position and conducts political admonishment through emotional narrative. Though the theme of the novel accords with the discourse of the mainstream ideology, it expresses the difficult breakthrough of the individualistic discourse of the intellectuals by means of the individual narrative of freedom ethics at the micro-level narrative.
