Interaction between Reality and Illusion——Analysis of the Fragmentation in Robert Coover's Cartoon

美国当代著名作家罗伯特.库弗在其短篇小说《卡通》中使用碎片化叙述的后现代主义写作手法,形成了独特的创作风格。小说以碎片化的形式叙述了"撞人"事件,创造了一个迷乱、困惑的世界,一个荒谬、混沌的社会,从而把真实与虚幻,写实与夸张,严肃和嘲讽巧妙地结合在一起。本文以碎片化特点为视角,通过对小说情节、人物以及场景三方面碎片化特点的具体分析,揭示了后现代主义小说"中心荡然无存,碎片突兀而立"的主题,表明了碎片能够反映后现代社会的混乱无序,以及人类自身的支离破碎,由此进一步展现小说现实与虚构交织互融的艺术特点。

The renowned American contemporary writer,Robert Coover painstakingly employs postmodernist literary devices in his short story Cartoon,thus forming a unique writing style of his own.The story,which is about a ＂car accident＂,is told in the form of fragmented narration so as to demonstrate the chaotic and absurd reality,thereby combing illusion with the real world,irony with seriousness.This essay attempts to analyze the writing techniques of fragmentation displayed in Cartoon in three aspects： plot,character and setting.The essay holds the view that,as one of the chief characteristics of postmodernism,fragmentation in literary writings is the effective way to reveal the chaos and disorder of postmodern society and fragmentariness of human beings.
