The Eighteenth-century British poet Alexander Pope was the very person with a strong sense of historical responsibili- ty. His poetry was imbued with a strong taste of moral didactic purpose, which represented the trend of thought of that age. It reflected the idea of the European Enlightenment and had profound significance to the development process of the British history of his time. In the context of social transition, Pope, in his poems, brought forward the ethical points concerned with nature, reason, the golden mean and order, and tried to maintain the social stabilization and development in terms of the essential con- cept of ＂harmony＂, through which his pursuit of the values behind the ethical thought could be well revealed.
