Dialogue between Cultures or between Cultural Interpretations of Modernity:Multi-Modernity in Contemporary Perspective

多元现代性理论摆脱了古典的现代性理论,转向了对不同现代性的文化诠释。多元现代性理论把世界不同地区的现代化当作不同的社会结构演化的结果,这就颠覆了只有一种西方式的现代性模式的假设。多元现代性展现了不同群体和社会运动对不同社会和文化的重构和界定,其开放性和反思性的特征尤为突出。因此,不同的现代性之间的紧张和冲突实际上反映了对现代性的不同理解和取向。

Going against classical theories of modernity,and giving up the single pattern derived from the West,the theory of multi-modernity focuses on cultural interpretations of modernity of different kinds,and regards modernizations in different places across the world as outcomes of different structural evolution in society.Multi-modernity gives rise to the restructure and definition,realized by different social groups and social movements,of different societies and cultures,highlighting their openness and capability of reflection.Tension and clash between modernity of various kinds can be narrowed down as different interpretations and orientations of modernity.
