在以往对于《失乐园》的研究中,学者们常认为弥尔顿主要通过撒旦的形象来表现自己的内心矛盾。弥尔顿不仅仅是将自己的矛盾集中体现在撒旦一人身上,而是将其分别隐藏于诗里的几个主要角色中。这几个角色所代表或体现出的矛盾有角色自身的矛盾,也有角色之间交互影响的矛盾。通过弥尔顿天马行空的想象及引人入胜、宏伟非凡的语言,这些矛盾凝结成其笔下一个个鲜活的人物,构筑出《失乐园》这一巨著。

In the previous studies of Paradise Lost, scholars constantly considered that Milton expressed his inner contradictions according to the image of Satan. Actually, Milton did not embody his contradictions on Satan only, but also on the other main characters in this long poem. Such contradictions include conflict in characters＇ selves, and conflict between them By Milton＇s unconstrained imagination and fascinating language, these conflicts form the animated characters and this poem which is the greatest masterpiece in English history.
