Ren Chunlei,CEO of groupon.cn,has recently become the first group purchase head contained by vendors,staff and media.The company owes tens of millions of renminbi to vendors and millions to its employees.Some insiders even suggested the company sell its domain name to the US Groupon for survival. Meanwhile,its rival gaopeng.com is no better. Some employees live broadcast the mass layoff inside the company:computers were forcibly recovered,and labor contracts were unilaterally terminated without any compensation. Xu Maodong,CEO of 55tuan.com,said hello on his microblog but soon received criticizes as the company is also reported to take on a new round of layoff.Some branches even cut down 90%of employees;some only kept three or four staffs. Group purchase was once considered a promising industry just years ago.The US leader Groupon grew fast,various venture capitals flooded in,and countless star-ups jumped in the industry with passion.Now,these legends of local e-commerce and dreams of company listing seemed so uncertain in this winter. Will group purchase die? Or is there any possible changes? Let's wait and see.
