Shimazakitoson's concept of nature focuses on both external nature and internal nature. Caught between Eastern tradition and Western influence, Shimazakitoson made remarkable achievements in poetry, producing such a great poem as Chikuma's Sketch. From his observation of the society and people around him, Shimazakitoson takes man and man's internal world as part of nature. In his old age, Shimazakitoson rethinks and relocates Eastern and Western civilizations, resulting in the change of his concept of nature. He talks about "a big nature" in his Yoakemae and advocates "going back to nature".
