The contemporary British woman writer Angela Carter's short story "Black Venus" takes a real figure, Jeanne Duval, the Creole mistress of Charles Baudelaire, the notorious decadent poet, as the subject of her subversive reconstruction. This short story not only serves as a field where the writer interrogates the "othering" of the East and the women within the colonial representational framework, but also develops a preserve for a black woman to articulate her own voice.
