In the poetry of the contemporary Northern Irish poet Paul Muldoon, animals are used as effective poetic metaphors for the exploration of the possibility of the poetic art in transcending Northern Irish parochialism, nationalism and the poet's personality in order to delve into the problems of identity, politics and history in broader artistic frameworks. This essay intends to analyze how Paul Muldoon employs animal metaphors to resolve the tension between aesthetic endeavor and historical environment, and to investigate problems of personality, the legitimacy of literature in political turmoil as well as other issues of poetics.
