Shakespeare＇s chronicle dramas have had a profound impact on the composition of modern history plays since Henrik Ibsen first experimented with the genre.The theater history of Shakespeare＇s English chronicle plays,in particular their performances in cycles,has significantly determined their effect on modern drama.From the mid-19th century in Germany the stage began to present these dramas in a chronological sequence.After World War II,the trend towards adaptation of the cycles became especially prominent.At the same time modern theater practitioners have borrowed from Shakespeare＇s history plays what they considered distinctive features,or they have appropriated individual texts.On the whole these relatively few adaptations of single chronicle plays have had less impact on contemporary theater than the dramatic cycles.Nevertheless,they help to reveal the many different connections among Shakespearean and contemporary versions of historical drama.
